Summary:

The Orthopedic Technician II works under the direct supervision of a Physician or Advanced Practice Provider assisting in the treatment and management of patients with musculoskeletal injuries, fractures, and other orthopedic conditions. This position involves providing patient care, applying and removing casts and splints, assisting with diagnostic tests, and providing general support including educating patients and families regarding the care provided.


Responsibilities:

1. Applies, removes, and adjusts casts and splints as well as setting up or removing skin traction under the supervision of the physician or APP.


2. Ensures proper fit and comfort of casts/splints, checking for signs of complications like skin irritation or poor circulation.


3. Understand how to read and interpret radiographs for proper cast molding and wedging.

4. Extreme comfort and mastery of cast removal equipment.

5. Prepares and assists patients for orthopedic procedures, ensuring comfort and safety.

6. Provides instruction and education to patients and patient families on proper care and maintenance of casts or braces.


7. Ability to place orders in the EMR for radiographs, cast removal and application, and application of braces per physician or APP's last appointment note. These are cosigned by the providers.

8. Proper documentation of orthopedic pathways and charging documentation for cast or brace applications.

9. Fully understand sterile techniques for wound care, pin removal, joint injections, suture removal and skin staple removal.

11. Observes and documents patient progress and reports any complications or concerns to the Orthopedic Team.

12. Educates patients and families on post-procedure care, including the importance of follow-up appointments and any specific instructions for casts or splint care.

13. Assists the Orthopedic Surgeon in procedures, including setting fractures, assisting in surgeries, and applying orthotics or braces.


14. Assist the orthopedic residents in the ED with proper ACH protocols for casting, bracing and proper treatment care pathways for follow up.

15. Ability to make proper arrangements, organization of ED teams and gather all needed supplies for any closed fracture reduction procedures. This includes holding skin traction, being present for in room x-rays and casting immediately in an efficient and timely manner.

16. Ability to see patients with a multitude of traumatic injuries while remaining focused on providing the highest level of orthopedic care in a calm and reassuring manner.

17. Ability to properly route ED phone calls to the resident while fully explaining the situation in a concise conversation.

18. Set up complicated traction frames for the surgical cases.

19. Provide orthopedic care to inpatient floor patients under the guidance of an orthopedic surgeon.

20. Answers questions from patients and families dealing with fractures or orthopedic surgeries providing emotional support and ensuring comfort and safety.


21. Maintains and cleans orthopedic equipment, such as casting tools, braces, and splints.


22. Ensures all equipment is sterilized and in working order and rooms are clean and organized for the next patient.


23. Assist with inventory control of supplies, including ordering and stocking materials.


24. Responsible for efficiently rooming patients ,maintaining patient medical records, and ensuring proper documentation of treatments and procedures.


25. Responsible for following all regulations set out by governing bodies including but not limited to OSHA, HIPAA and JACHO.


26. Other duties as assigned.

Technical Expertise

1. Basic knowledge of medical terminology preferred.


2. Excellent patient care and interpersonal skills.


3. Ability to follow instructions and work as part of a healthcare team.

4. Ability to stay organized and manage time effectively in a fast-paces environment.


5. Experience in a healthcare setting preferred, preferably in orthopedics.

6. Experience working with all levels within an organization required.


7. Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word or similar software is required.


8. EMR experience preferred.


Education and Experience

1. Education: High School Diploma or equivalent required. Completion of an allied health program (LPN, Medical Assistant, Athletic Trainer, Surgical Technician, Paramedic or EMY basic) is preferred.


2. Certification: NBCOT preferred

3. Certifications: BLS required.


4. Years of Experience: 3 years minimum required.
