Job Description

Job Title: Overhead Crane Operator 2nd Shift - 2:20 PM to 12:50 AM M-Th
90 business day contract to union
Job Description
This full-time role focuses on safely operating overhead cranes to unload semi-trailers, stage sheet metal products, and handle material after it has been cut to length in a large industrial warehouse environment. You will support production by moving materials to and from the cut-to-length line and plasma cutting equipment and will receive training to operate these machines as you grow in the role. This is a 90-day contract-to-hire opportunity that transitions into a union position with strong benefits and ongoing skills development.
Responsibilities
  • Operate overhead cranes to safely unload semis and move sheet metal products throughout the facility.
  • Stage material for production, including positioning sheet metal for cut-to-length and plasma cutting operations.
  • Handle sheet metal after it has been cut to length, including organizing, stacking, and preparing it for shipment or re-rolling.
  • Support machine operators by supplying materials, removing finished products, and ensuring continuous workflow on the cut-to-length line and plasma cutters.
  • Learn and eventually operate the cut-to-length line to process sheet metal orders to precise specifications.
  • Learn and eventually operate plasma cutting equipment to cut sheet metal according to customer requirements.
  • Perform material handling tasks such as loading, unloading, order picking, and inventory-related activities to maintain accurate stock levels.
  • Follow all safety procedures and participate in required safety training on the first day and ongoing as needed.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area to promote safety and efficiency in the production environment.
  • Work assigned shifts reliably, including training on first shift if hired for an off-shift, and adhere to scheduled breaks and lunch periods.
Essential Skills
  • At least 1 year of manufacturing experience.
  • Experience with overhead crane operation or a strong willingness to learn overhead crane operation.
  • Material handling experience, including loading, unloading, staging, and moving product within a warehouse or production environment.
  • Ability to work safely in an industrial setting and follow detailed safety procedures.
  • Willingness to learn new equipment and processes, including plasma cutting and cut-to-length machine operation.
  • Basic understanding of production workflows and inventory handling.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including standing for long periods and handling sheet metal products.
  • Reliable attendance and the ability to work full-time on assigned shifts.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Previous experience operating overhead cranes is a significant plus.
  • Work experience in sheet metal, steel, or similar industrial production environments.
  • Experience with order picking and inventory tasks in a warehouse setting.
  • Comfort working with large industrial machinery such as cut-to-length lines and plasma cutters.
  • Strong attention to detail when handling and staging material to meet customer specifications.
  • Ability to adapt to a fast-paced production environment and support multiple areas as needed.

Why Work Here?
This role offers a clear pathway from a 90-day contract into a union position with exceptional benefits and long-term stability. You will have the opportunity to train and certify on multiple machines, including cut-to-length lines and plasma cutters, which can increase your wage once hired directly. The company invests in safety and skill development from day one, providing structured training and a supportive environment for individuals who are motivated to learn and grow their careers in industrial manufacturing.
Work Environment
You will work in a large, industrial warehouse originally built to be big enough to construct warships, creating a spacious but traditional, old-school manufacturing environment. The facility operates as a full-time production site with a 90-day contract-to-union structure. Second shift runs from 2:20 PM to 12:50 AM Monday through Thursday. The schedule includes two 15-minute breaks and one 30-minute unpaid lunch. The building is not climate-controlled; doors open and close frequently, so it can be hot in the summer and cold in the winter, and employees should be comfortable working in varying temperatures. On the first day, you will complete safety training and necessary paperwork before starting hands-on work. This is a sheet metal production environment with overhead cranes, cut-to-length lines, plasma cutters, and other industrial equipment in regular use. Steel toe boots with non-detachable metatarsal covers are required as part of the safety-focused dress code.
