Purpose and Scope The PT Interpreter II functions as an advanced-level, professional interpreter for LSC students, faculty, staff and administration, and visitors who are Deaf/Hard of Hearing, in order to maintain compliance with Section 504 and the ADA. Interpreters strive to advance sign language proficiency to provide the highest professional interpreter services possible. Essential Job Functions Provide sign language translation (voice and signing) and related formats for Deaf or Hard of Hearing clients, all LSC students, faculty, staff, administration, and visitors, in all requested locations and settings, at the appropriate language and register level. Analyze source language content, meaning, and intent to deliver accurate information to the target audience. Communicate client information, status, and concerns to the supervisor. Research situations (including new or complex information) to understand what will/may be interpreted. Act as a mentor for level one interpreters. Ethically model positive and inclusive employee behavior. Attend and actively participate in department meetings and activities. Continuously review current processes and procedures, and share challenges and improvement ideas with supervisor and team. Perform other reasonable, related duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Strong fluency in both Sign Language and English, preserving meaning, tone, and emotional value. Ability to interpret in higher-level (BEI Advanced or equivalent) situations. Ability to mentor lower-level interpreters. Willingness to accept assignments at various times and locations within the LSC service area, including evenings and weekends. Maintain confidentiality and discretion. Knowledge of the structure and content of Sign Language and English, including idioms. Understand and adhere to LSC Policy on Students with Disability Rights, FERPA, and related regulations. Knowledge of the Interpreter Code of Professional Conduct (Texas Health and Human Services Commission). Thorough knowledge of Deaf culture and the Deaf community. Basic computer skills: typing, internet search, word processing, and using proprietary software to maintain a work calendar. Maintain a professional and friendly attitude, quickly developing rapport with a wide variety of people. Strong interpersonal and communication skills, in tact and diplomacy. Sensitivity to cultural differences. Excellent listening and customer service skills. Strong organizational and planning skills with attention to detail and follow-through. Physical Abilities Fine finger dexterity, use of hands and arms to communicate in Sign Language for extended periods. Vision abilities: close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception, and focus adjustment. Ability to sit, stand, and walk around to maintain line of sight with clients; necessary for campus tours, clinical settings. Receive detailed information orally and discriminate sound. Convey detailed or important instructions accurately in English and Sign Language. Work Schedule and Conditions Interpretive assignments occur at various times and locations within LSC service area, including evenings and weekends. PC workstation on LAN in a Windows environment; calculator, phone, and other office equipment; may use video phone or sign language software. Internal and external contacts as needed. Work performed in varied environments: climate-controlled office, classroom, meeting, convention; occasional indoor/outdoor lab; remote services; minimal safety hazards. Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree and at least 5 years of related work experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Active BEI Advanced certification or higher, or equivalent. Reliable mode of transportation to travel between assignments within LSC Service Area.
